HUNTER CLASSICS AMATEUR WOMEN'S TOUR Second Hunter Classics Tour Stop of 2002 at Corner Pocket in ALB, NM.

Leslie Anne Rogers, Orietta Strickland, Yvette Johnson and Wes Hunter

On the beautiful, but cool weekend of February 23rd and 24th, 36 ladies can to compete at Corner Pocket in Albuquerque, NM.  Seven states were represented, Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota and New Mexico., but only one lady won.  Leslie Anne Rogers from Texas, last year's Tour Champion, went undefeated in the tournament to capture the title and $750.

We would like to thank Wes Hunter, our Tour sponsor and continuous contributor, who was able to join us this stop and set up his cues and shop.  Many ladies had their cues conditioned and it was an added bonus to also thank him in person for his continued support of women's pool.

We would like to also thank the waitresses and bartenders of Corner Pocket who took wonderful care of us.  The 22 nine foot tables were re-felted and we were honored to be using brand new ball   sets from them.  Also thank you to Rachel and Leslie who helped ref our tournament.

By Sunday morning, the field was narrowed down to 8 players.  On the winner's side, Leslie Anne Rogers defeated Orietta Strickland (previous stop's runner-up) and Yvette Johnson of Arizona defeated Albuquerque's Pearl Ortiz.  On the one-loss side, young Anna Konstanian was defeated by Albuquerque's Miriam Martinez and Melinda Bailey, Tour Board Member, defeated Albuquerque's Theresa Wilson.

To get to the finals, Texas' Orietta Strickland had a bye then defeated Susan Wilbur 7-4, Julie Stephenson 7-1 and Juanita Hase 7-3 before losing to Leslie 3-7.  Then Orietta defeated Melinda Bailey 7-5, Miriam Martinez 7-2 and Yvette Johnson 7-1 before meeting up with Leslie again.

Leslie Anne Rogers' road to the finals was with wins over Shanna Lewis 7-2, Lisa Marr 7-6, Eveyln Hampton 7-3, Orietta Strickland 7-3, Yvette Johnson 7-0 and Orietta Strickland 7-4 to win the tournament!  Leslie won first place and $750, Orietta placed second and won $550, Yvette Johnson placed third and won $400 and Miriam placed 4th and won $250.

Pearl Ortiz not only placed 5th/6th in the tournament, she also won the beautiful Hunter Classics Custom Cue valued at $2,200!

Sunday also presented a second chance tournament and Albuquerque's Delann Nash defeated Arizona's Susan Wilbur in the finals and took home $100.  Susan placed second and earned $70.

Congratulations to all of the ladies on a fine tournament!

Thanks again to Wes Hunter, everyone who helped us run the board, Corner Pocket and the support of all the ladies.  We look forward to a continued great and exciting year.  Remember, all of our stops are $2,000 added and the rest of our stops will all be qualifiers!
