Deb Winter
Thornton, CO Cue: Showcase Tru-Hit ![]() I am 40+ years old, have the best husband in the world (Bob Winter), have a wonderful and charming son named Dominic who has started a family with lovely Sarah and given me a couple of beautiful grandkids named Donovan and Jennifer, and I love to play this awesome game of pool. I first started playing pool in 1986 and played for a little over a year. I played on a women's league and was fortunate enough to finish the league as one of the top shooters. My accuracy had increased, but I knew nothing about english, position, stroke, stance, or anything else that is necessary to make a good pool player. Anyway, after that short introduction, I didn't play pool for about 10 years. My life took several turns and in the summer of 1996 I decided to pick up a pool stick again. I joined leagues, bought myself a pool cue, and started playing tournaments. I was also very lucky to meet a certain Mr. Bob Winter. We played on leagues together and became friends. He is a great (and patient) teacher and he started showing me some of the finer techniques of pool. After several months, I fell madly in love with him and we got married on July 4th, 1997. Over the last few years I have learned so many things about this tricky game of pool. In October of 1997, I took my first - 1st Place - in the VNEA Greeley Singles Tournament. It is a regional tournament with different divisions so players of all levels can compete. I played in the Women's B division and by taking 1st Place I learned how it feels to win (it's an awesome feeling). Of course, I didn't take another 1st Place until June of 1999. However, I decided to do it up right. This particular tournament was the 19th Annual VNEA International Singles Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thousands of pool players from all over the world converge in Las Vegas to compete for money, trophies, and to get their name on the "Wall of Fame", which houses the names of champions from each year. I am extremely excited and honored to have my name added to the "Wall of Fame". Playing in tournaments is so much fun. You get to meet so many people who love the sport of pool as much as you do. They are also something that Bob and I can do together. After each tournament we usually spend time talking about what we did, what we could have done different, and all that pool stuff. We also compete against each other as seriously as possible so that we each stay on top of our game. We love the sport so much that in August of 1999, we bought a regional billiard publication called the Cue Times Billiard News and our goal is to do whatever we can to make it a great newspaper that the players (and non-players) enjoy reading. We get lots of great comments from people. There is nothing better than hearing a player say that they just got done reading an article or an advertiser say that someone mentioned they saw the ad in the Cue Times. It is an awesome feeling when we deliver the paper and people come up to immediately get their copy. This is what it's all about. Anyway, remember to always have fun with your game (whichever game it is). Happy shooting! |
